DA Mike Ramos to Crackdown on

DID YOU KNOW: 37% of minors arrested for DUI in San Bernardino County say their last drink was at a house party and/or gathering.

Today, at the Fontana Police Department, District Attorney Mike Ramos, Sheriff Rod Hoops and all the police chiefs of San Bernardino County spoke at a press conference in favor of reversing the trends of underage drinking and enforcement of social host ordinances.

A social host ordinance makes it illegal to provide an environment where underage drinking can take place.

"These ordinances are aimed at party hosts who know what is going on and let the drinking continue," said District Attorney Mike Ramos. "I can assure you that my office is committed to prosecuting violators of the social host ordinances."

DEPUTY DA KURT ROWLEY RECEIVES AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.  – As part of National Public Service Recognition Week, Deputy District Attorney Kurt Rowley was recognized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today in the government center chambers.

Once a year, one employee from each participating county department is selected for an Award for Excellence, based on outstanding service to county and its citizens.

Rowley, who has been a Deputy District Attorney since 1997, currently oversees the Child Abduction Unit (CAU) of the District Attorney’s Office.

During the course of his time in the CAU, Rowley has worked closely with INTERPOL and other international agencies to resolve hundreds of child abduction disputes within the United States as well as children taken from all parts of the world.

FONTANA AMUSEMENT PARK OWNER ADMITS TO WORKERS’ COMP FRAUD AND TAX EVASION

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.  – An amusement park owner charged with workers’ comp fraud and tax evasion entered into a plea agreement with the District Attorney’s Office.

In October 2011, following a suspected fraudulent claim referral form from the insurance company, investigators from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, Workers’ Comp Fraud Unit, served a search warrant on various properties owned and/or controlled by Thomas, 58, and Sharie Davis, 54, both of Fontana. Thomas and Sharie Davis are the owners of Davis Enterprises, a carnival and amusement park business.

During the course of the investigation it was found that Davis had illegally operated at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego County and other carnivals in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Following the investigation, it was determined that the Thomas and Sharie Davis underreported the amount of their company payroll in order to pay smaller premiums to the State Compensation Insurance Fund, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Chiriatti, Jr., who is assigned to the case.
In addition to the insurance fraud, Thomas and Sharie Davis also failed to pay payroll tax between April 2010 and March 2011.

According to the plea agreement, Davis agreed to pay $195,937 to the State Compensation Insurance Fund and $18,206 to Employment Development Department. In exchange for her pleas, the charges against her husband were dropped.

“As of result of their fraud, Davis Enterprises illegally pocketed over $200,000 in taxes and insurance premiums,” said Chiriatti. “This is felony conduct, and I am happy that the defendant has been held responsible for her fraudulent behavior.”
